Alcudia presents a highly varied landscape. As well as numerous coves and beaches with transparent waters, it also offers a broad range of opportunities for all visitors: from those seeking peace and relaxation or doing some kind of sport, to enjoying nature, being immersed in history and culture, right up to those interested in gastronomy, folklore, handicrafts, etc.
The municipality of Alcúdia includes different population centres: the historical centre, the port, Alcudia beach, and other residential zones (Alcanada, La Marina, Barcarès, Moré Vermell, Manresa, Mal Pas, Bon Aire, etc.). Each one of them has its own special charm making it unique.
Historical Center
The historical center of Alcudia originates in the XIV century after the Catalan conquest of the island. King James II of Mallorca ordered the construction of the walls to protect the city and the island of possible enemy attacks. In the XVII century a second wall, of Renaissance style was built, currently under restoration .
Alcúdia was declared Artistic Historial Site in 1974 and is nowadays the best preserved walled town of the Island.
In the historical center of Alcudia you can visit buildings impregnated of history, of great beauty and architectural value. There are gothic and Renaissance houses. Also civil, religious and cultural buildings like the Town Hall, Can Torró library, Can Fondo, Can Joanet, Can Domènec, the roman city of Pollentia and its museum, the Church and Parish Museum of Sant Jaume, The Bullring, amongst other unique buildings like the Auditorio de Alcúdia and Can Ramis, where you can find the Tourist Information Office.
The centre is only for pedestrians and in its streets you can enjoy a wide range of gastronomy and shopping.
Every Tuesday and Sunday is celebrated the craft and food market which has its origins in the 14th century.
Puerto De Alcudia
The Port of Alcudia has a great relevance since Roman times for its commercial activity and its strategic position in the Western Mediterranean . It is currently the second largest port in the island after Palma. It's located 1.5 kilometres from the historical center.
Around a small nucleus of fishermen's houses a world-class tourist center, has been developed with a sports/ leisure port for nautical tourism and with a wide selection of leisure, gastronomy and shopping.
In the harbour, traditional fishing boats mingle with modern vessels dedicated mostly to the recreational and sport fishing.
The Port of Alcudia is part of the network of ports of the Balearic Islands and has had a prominent role in the development of not only the city but also in the own island of Mallorca paper. It is now a destination for cruise tourism.
Economic activities such as trade, fisheries exploitation, shipbuilding in the shipyards, transport of people , strategic needs and defensive activities, have been present in its history.
It has two very different areas: the commercial dock and the smaller vessels one, which is formed by the fishing harbour and a marina.
A modern promenade runs around the port with a wide range of leisure, dining, shopping and tourist accommodation offer.
Alcudia Beach
Alcúdia Beach has an area of 7 km of fine white sand. It extends from the Port, along the bay that bears its name, between the sea and the large Albufera (lagoon), where you can still find many lakes and canals. It is ranked among the best beaches in Europe. It is a beach with calm, crystal clear waters. The safety, leisure activities and its facilities and services, make it an exceptional destination for family tourism and the practice of sports.
Along the beach there is an important nucleus of population that combines residential areas with a large hotel infrastructure and services. Alcudia Beach also comprises the waterfront, as well as the areas of Maristany, Lago Menor and Lago Esperanza.
For over twenty years the Playa de Alcudia gets numerous awards, including the blue flag of the EU. In addition, since 2013, the beach has been awarded the ISO 14001: 2004 for cleaning, maintenance, operation of spas, kiosks, nautical elements, rent of hammocks and parasols, as well as rescue and surveillance.
The Mediterranean climate of mild winters makes Alcúdia beach an ideal place for walks or sports such as Nordic- Walking, jogging, tai-chi, yoga, etc. Therefore, some of the best athletes and European sports teams choose the Playa de Alcudia for their training.
Residential Areas
In Alcúdia you can also find the residential areas of Alcanada, Sa Marina, Barcarés, Morer Vermell, Manresa, Mal Pas and Bon Aire. Alcanada is a residential nucleus of great natural beauty, where is located a small island with a lighthouse built in 1856 and a pebble beach . Its development began in the thirties of the XX century driven by landscape architect Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí , which projected a fishing village of which its original identity is still preserved . On the former possession of Alcanada it has now been developed a major tourist resort with hotels and a golf course , considered one of the best in the world. Sa Marina is a residential area mostly occupied by holidaymakers of the island. Can Capdebou, its beach, is located between l'Albufereta and the Bay of Pollença. Due to its geographical conditions of shallow water it is an ideal place for wind water sports (surfing, windsurfing, paddlesurf , skysurf , rowing, sailing ...) . Following the coast you will find the areas of the Morer Vermell and Barcarés, where low buildings complete the residential area of rocky coasts and shallow waters. Between these two areas there is the small port of the Barcarés , which is so named because it was here where traditional boats were built , and where the minor historic port of Alcúdia stood , in ancient times.
The areas of Manresa and Mal Pas stand out for its two small beaches located between limestone cliffs: Sant Joan and Sant Pere. Next to the latter there is a fortification, the Manresa Castle , now converted into a residence. The first colony of Summer holidays on the island of Mallorca was installed on old farms in these two areas at the end of the 19th century.
Currently you can observe some of the first traditional summer residences. Alongside these two resorts was established, in the last third of the 20th century , the modern residential area of Bon Aire with its nautical club El Cocodrilo.
Guided Tours
The Department of Tourism of the Alcúdia Council offers every year a series of guided tours through the historical center, the Roman city of Pollentia and trips around the outskirts of the city.
These activities will be shown on the monthly agenda WHAT'S ON NOW where you can know the exact dates and the plannin.
Culture
The culture is present in Alcudia throughout the year but is with the onset of good weather when it moves to the streets.
The Alcudia Auditorium, inaugurated in 2000 has a stable annual programming of performing and musical arts. This infrastructure is used for all types of culture-related events: classical and contemporary music, theatre, dance, cinema...
The Library Foundation of Alcúdia - Can Torró-, is another multipurpose space that has a varied cultural offer and activities (exhibitions, conferences, workshops and various acts) throughout the year.
Theatre moves outdoors in Alcúdia during the Summer months, especially in July and August. The medieval city becomes a great stage to represent the Via Fora. The Via Fora show consists of short theatrical performances which are transferred to the street to explain different moments in the history of the city to those present, performing at the same time a journey through the wall and different corners of the historic centre of Alcudia. A group of actors and musicians will discover treasures hidden in Alcudia and will lead us to the past time.
Continuing with the representations outdoors, you can enjoy them in the Roman Theater of the city of Pollentia. With more than 20 centuries of antiquity, this theater still receives during August a Festival that combines authors' works of the classic antiquity with works of contemporary authors. A magic place where to get lost in the warm nights of August.
Finally, throughout the year, several fairs and traditional festivals include a wide range of cultural activities for all who want to have fun and discover the tradition and culture of Mallorca. Trade fairs such as the Fira d'Alcúdia and the Fira Nàutica i Gastronòmica de la Sípia or traditional festivities such as Christmas, Sant Antoni, Holy Week, Sant Pere or Sant Jaume are a great opportunity to get to know Alcúdia and enjoy its phenomenal cultural and leisure offer.
